coffee time

Yesterday was the first official day for coffee picking on the farm. We had a lot of beans in each of our fields.  After picking we began the process of removing the pulp. It was at that point I knew something was wrong with the beans; they looked damaged, and you could see a hole: the sure tell sign of the coffee bean borer. It is so disappointing to find out that we have it.  There are ways to manage it and we will do our best to do that, but we will probably have a significantly lower yield this year. There’s no surefire way to get rid of them short of getting rid of all the trees and starting over. Unfortunately it’s a huge problem on the Big Island and now it’s a problem on our farm.  We will keep you posted how our management efforts go.IMG_20150822_111311_hdr
